
Hoʻoulu Mentorship
The intent of the WCIT Hoʻoulu Mentorship is to give interested students (high school and those in their
first-second year of college) exposure to careers in design and architecture within an office setting.
THE PROGRAM
The Program is 2-3 weeks with a target of 40-50 hours total.
There are two different schedule scenarios offered:

Three (3) days a week at 8 hours a day (8am – 5pm with 1hr for lunch)

Five (5) days a week at 4 hours a day (8am – 12noon or 1pm – 5pm).

Workplace Immersion & Professional Exposure

Immersion in a workplace environment.

Exposure to the daily activities of a design and architectural professional, including external meetings, internal meetings, design sessions, site visits, design and drawing tasks, research, and construction administration.

Project Experience & Hands-On Practice

Exposure to project-specific activities, including external meetings, internal meetings, design sessions, site visits, design and drawing tasks, research, and construction administration.

Mentorship through hands-on activities and tutorial instruction, requiring initiative, questions, and self-direction.

Mentorship & Professional Guidance

Direct mentorship by a Project Manager, Project Architect, or Design Leader throughout the mentorship experience, including office orientation and daily check-ins.

Firm Methodology & Business Operations

Exposure to a presentation about WCIT’s methodology, design portfolio, current projects, and breadth of services.

Exposure to project management, project delivery, and business development in design and architecture.

Career Development & Professional Networking

Professional Engagement
& Conduct
Mentees are expected to actively engage in the workplace by asking questions, participating in discussions, and conducting themselves in a professional manner at all times.

Reflective Mentorship Documentation
Mentees must submit a 3–5 minute video reflecting on their mentorship experience, including what they learned, what they worked on, what surprised them, what inspires them, and how the experience may influence their future education and career goals.

Written Summary &
Program Use Authorization
Mentees must submit a written summary aligned with their video reflection. Both the video and written materials will be used and shared by the WCIT Foundation for scholarship materials and Foundation events.
Talk Story Sessions

A Project Manager, Emma and the Mentor will set up talk-story sessions with various staff members at different career levels.

This includes, interns, recent graduates, staff 5 years into their career, staff 10+ years into their career, both architects and interior designers, additional designers, principals, project managers or staff at WCIT.

The conversation can cover topics about academics, life after college, licensure, certification, “a day in the life”, getting into the profession, etc. It helps if the student asks questions and if the mentor is actively listening and can share hands on examples of work
they are doing.
Expectations:

For staff persons, Mentors, as much as possible, be mindful of time, start the talk-story session on time, and invite the mentee to their desk or meeting table. Don’t expect mentee to feel comfortable interrupting you should you look busy.

For mentee’s ask questions, approach staff persons, do not be intimidated, WCIT staff are approachable and interested to share. Please keep project specific information confidential.
