SALT at Our Kaka‘ako will be a city block alive with energy. Where innovation, authenticity and passion are woven into the fabric of the community.

DESCRIPTION

Named after the pa‘akai (Hawaiian for “salt”) ponds that once dotted the low-lying wetlands of this area, SALT at Our Kaka‘ako is Honolulu’s epicenter for local culture, food, shopping and innovative events. Comprising of 85,000 square-feet of curated retail, restaurant and mixed-use space, SALT is a dynamic city block designed for exploration and engagement. This groundbreaking gathering place in the heart of Our Kaka‘ako is where new makers and new ideas converge. SALT at Our Kaka‘ako is on a 130,000 sf site of mixed-use development by Kamehameha Schools that is designed to foster a sense of place and community. WCIT Architecture worked with the internal cultural and commercial teams at Kamehameha Schools to embody a Hawaiian urban sense of place at SALT. WCIT brings to the project a cultural lens that magnifies and gives contemporary expression to the historical roots of SALT at Our Kaka‘ako through the meaningful composition of commissioned art, the design of connected gathering  and public spaces, and the overlay of culture and history in the design and placement of signage and way finding.
