The Howard Hughes Corporation serves as operator and manager of Kewalo Harbor, which, in part, returns the stewardship of the fishery of Kukulae‘o to the Ward neighborhood. The harbor sits directly makai of Ward Village, a new, integrated community that offers unique retail experiences and residences set among public open spaces and walkable streets.
DESCRIPTION
The Howard Hughes Corporation committed to start with community-based planning for the entire area and Victoria Ward Limited began informal discussions with community stakeholders regarding potential improvements at Kewalo Basin Harbor. Victoria Ward Limited, HHC and its consultant team shared back to the community the ideas previously expressed, and how these ideas, along with the 2011 Kaka‘ako Makai Conceptual Master Plan, had begun to inform and direct the new master planning efforts for Kewalo Harbor. Kewalo Harbor: Our Makai Community Gathering Place, was proposed as a narrative to describe the importance of this place to the community as well as the inspiration for a comprehensive and cohesive master plan solution. Five distinctive areas were identified for their unique characteristics: Piko, Pilina, Kauhale, Kahakai, & Kai. The successful community dialog that began with these two important community stakeholder workshops has continued through to today. The result is a Kewalo Harbor Waterfront Development Proposal that prioritizes the character and maritime uses of the working harbor while establishing itself as a new and vibrant Makai Gathering Place for Our Community.
