Wailea, Honua‘ula, Maui
The land upon which Kamehameha and Princess Pauahi once resided and entertained is today the home of the Bank of Hawai‘i and its employees. The bank, inspired by the stories of the ali‘i who would host both dignitaries and the maka‘āinana, have created a new community space in the sky.
Andaz Maui at Wailea conceived a Hawaiian apothecary concept for the `Āwili Spa and Salon to incorporate indigenous herbs into customized treatments. The award-winning spa offers a fresh and intimate take to the traditional spa experience. The 14,000-square-foot spa features ten treatment rooms, a full-service salon, three relaxation rooms, a 24-hour fitness center and a private adult spa pool. Adorned with tall, custom cabinets to store herbs and organic products such as Malie, Salt of the Earth, Tammy Fender and SkinCeuticals, the spa lounge features a large walnut table where Andaz Apothecary Consultants mix freshly picked herbs and other organic items to create teas, lotions and oils for guests’ treatments. The moment you enter the spa, visitors view is overwhelmed by gorgeous custom wood work with drawers spanning from the floor to ceiling in what conjures the feeling of an Old World apothecary with a modern twist. Those with an eye for detail may notice a certain familiarity about this table. What few realize is that this piece is made from the end caps of the 92 beams holding up the ceiling in the open-air lounge at the front of the resort.
